Kakum National Park is a protected rainforest area in southern Ghana, located near Cape Coast in the Central Region. The park covers a large area of tropical forest with tall trees, dense undergrowth, streams, and shaded paths. It is part of the Upper Guinea Forest ecosystem, one of West Africa’s important remaining rainforest zones. Kakum is particularly known for its canopy walkway, which allows visitors to experience the forest from above the ground and observe the different layers of vegetation that make up the rainforest.

The forest has long been connected with communities living around the park, whose traditional knowledge includes the use of plants for food, materials, and medicine. The surrounding area is home to Akan-speaking communities with established cultural traditions, crafts, music, and foodways. Kakum itself is managed as a protected area, with conservation and environmental education forming important parts of its role. The canopy walkway is Kakum’s best-known attraction, consisting of suspended bridges crossing between platforms high in the forest canopy. Ground-level trails lead through the rainforest, where visitors may encounter monkeys, forest elephants, antelope, and numerous bird species, although sightings vary. The park is also recognized for its rich plant diversity, including large hardwood trees and climbing plants characteristic of West African rainforest.

Kakum’s natural environment supports a wide range of plant and animal species, making conservation central to the park’s importance. The forest is home to more than 500 species of butterflies and a substantial variety of birds, while several threatened mammals occur within the protected area. The park also has an important educational role through guided walks and interpretation focused on rainforest ecology. Its location near Cape Coast makes Kakum a notable destination for experiencing Ghana’s tropical forest environment alongside the region’s broader cultural and historical attractions.
